UFA, Russia – The U.S. National Junior Team was tripped up by Canada, 2-1, here tonight at Ufa Arena in the preliminary round of the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship. With the loss, the U.S. falls to 1-0-0-2 (W-OTW-OTL-L) within tournament play.
"We had our opportunities to tie or win the game," said Phil Housley, head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team. "We have to eliminate our mistakes, and that includes penalties. Thankfully, our penalty killers stayed composed and were great tonight. In net, John Gibson certainly kept us in the game. Now, we have to regroup and get ready for Slovakia tomorrow."
Canada began the scoring at 7:13 of the first period and added another before the opening frame was completed to take two-goal lead.
Despite a four-minute power play early in the second stanza and quality scoring chances by Cole Bardreau (Fairpoint, N.Y./Cornell Univ.) and Alex Galchenyuk (Milwaukee, Wis./Sarnia Stings), Team USA was unable to find the back of the net.
In the final frame, Jacob Trouba (Rochester, Mich./Univ. of Mich.) pulled the U.S. within one. After John Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kitchener Rangers) stopped a Canadian shot, Trouba jumped into the U.S. rush going the other way. Mike Reilly (Chanhassen, Minn./Univ. of Minn.) fed Galchenyuk who then found Trouba cutting through the right faceoff circle. Trouba shot the puck over Malcolm Subban's left pad and into the net. Despite a late power play opportunity, Team USA was unable to find the equalizer.
Each goalie received his team's respective Player of the Game award. Gibson stopped 30 shots for the U.S., while Subban turned aside 36 shots for Canada.
Team USA concludes preliminary round play against Slovakia on Monday (Dec. 31) in Ufa, Russia. A victory would advance the U.S. into the playoff round as the No. 3 seed in Group B. Game time is 4:00 p.m. local time (5:00 a.m. ET) with NHL Network (DirectTV 215, Dish 403) broadcasting live and NHL.com streaming live.
